Note that Toyota chooses to focus on what it defines as the two key pillars of TPS: jidoka, or the highlighting and visualization of problems as a method of building in quality during the manufacturing process; and just-in-time, defined as “making only what is needed, when it is needed, in the amount needed".

This programme catered to only engineering graduates. In 1991-92, one of the first national level surveys of B-schools and business education programmes in our country. The MBA programme at IIT-M was conceptualized taking into account the strong and urgent need for well educated and developed managers who would not only be able to understand the finer nuances of business but also be able to put into practice the knowledge and values acquired during the programme.
